Two life-size statues of the Tuskegee Airmen were unveiled Saturday at Freeman Municipal Airport in Seymour, Ind., the final day of dedication week for the expanded Tuskegee Airmen memorial, the Indianapolis Star reports.
One of the statues depicts a Tuskegee Airman in his flight gear to represent the defense of the nation, and the other is a Tuskegee Airman in an officer's uniform to represent the discrimination they faced.
The idea for the statues started in 2015 when Tim Molinari, whose son had his dedication for his Eagle Scout project, and his son thought about how statues could be presented to the community to represent important events or important people, Molinari says.
The Community Foundation of Jackson County raised money for the statues, which will be installed in the coming months.
The Tuskegee Airmen served in the US Air Force during World War II.
A historical marker about the Freeman Field Mutiny was also unveiled.
